Points+Lines by Sten Allen

Stan Allen describes field conditions as “bottom-up phenomena: defined not by overarching geometrical schemas but by intricate local connections.” What are some field condition examples that can be found in the road systems of Lubbock?

Some examples of field conditions would be grid layouts of roads, how it is approached and labeled. The labeling of streets and pattern system used, the stop signs on street intersections. As well as how the field condition of water is affected by the grading of the road.

In part 1, Allen distinguishes a geometric relationship of classical architecture from an algebraic combination of the Cordoba Mosque. How do these two architectural examples differ?

Classical Architecture has a hierarchy nad is organized into coherent wholes by means of geometric systems
And the Cordoba Mosque started as one set condition and one unit was replicated to expand the mosque.

What are some other examples of field conditions that can be observed around campus?

The paving, hardscape, is another example of field condition around campus, the paths that lead people onto many different ways and destinations. The crowd in stadiums and sports complexes is another level of a field condition. As well as the movement of people and the consistency of parking spaces on parking lots.

How does a field condition stand to redefine the relation between figure and round?

It is just a representation of the space used and not used, like Italian architect Giambattista Nolli did with a drawing representing Rome by introducing variable usage.

For an Architecture of Reality by Michael Benedikt

What is the reality Michael Benedikt writes about?

How architecture relates to that reality of absence and sometimes ends up in a tangible and non-tangible reality.

Benedikt describes degrees of reality in architecture as: Architecture of Dreams, Architecture of Games, Architecture of Illusions, Architecture of Enactments and Architecture of Jokes. What are some example buildings that fall under these categories?

Architecture of Dreams: The architecture of Steven Holl, is a good example that architecture only seen on dreams and that contemporary but futuristic style it has.
Architecture Of Illusions: would be a building trying to imitate or attempt a style

Benedikt describes “direct esthetic experience of the real” as being moments without symbolism. Where in our environment does symbolism occur and where in our environment is symbolism absent? What is an example of this situation?

Every thing has a degree of symbolism, symbolism occurs in buildings like catholic churches, shopping malls, as well in spaces like parking lots, utility spaces. But there is also non-symbolic spaces like rooftops in parking lots.

Although Benedikt’s position pulls examples from the 70‘s and 80‘s to illustrate that an architecture of reality is polar to the post-modern architecture movement, this condition continues to exist today. Where in the city would be examples of an architecture of reality and post-modern architecture?

Suburban houses is an example of post-modern architecture and Robert Venturi's mom house
The four components that define the “realness” of an architecture for reality are: presence, significance, materiality, and emptiness (in two categories). How do these components relate to architecture? and What are some examples of architectural elements that make up these conditions?

I think they all relate to architecture because in someway they make up architecture.
Presence: type of impact
Significance: valeu and importance to someone
Materiality: How the material informs and is used to convey the architecture
Emptiness: (1) The type of space that still defines space Ex. Kimball Art Museum
(2) the one that is still empty.
